New Search Engine Tool

Intelways is a fast and convenient one-stop search tool to search for just about anything on the web. It is a comprehensive set of search channels organized into different categories. You can easily find web content and information in different formats, topics and media types, by retrieving results from multiple online providers and search engines.

You type your search question and select any one of the search tools and the results appear in a frame below the search boxes. The Intelways menu remains at the top of the screen as you scroll through your searchresults, and can switch from one search engine to another. The selection includes several Google search indexes, Wikipedia, several multimedia search engines, social bookmarking sites, and even Amazon and eBay. There are also categories of tools for general searching, images, video, news, searching by file type, and reference sources.

Intelways also has a country-specific filter, currently for 11 countries.

Substance Abuse and Treatment Databases

Barbara Weiner of the Substance Abuse Librarians and Information Specialists association has compiled an annotated webliography of 80 databases and other online resources on substance abuse and treatment. Please feel free to utililize this information or pass on these links to others in need.

Internet Archive: American Libraries

I have added a link above for the American Libraries Internet Archive. You can access digitally recreated books in full color and black and white. The British Museum, Smithsonian, University of Illinois and others have partnered to scan in (digitize) books. Books are available for free download in pdf, DjVu, plain text or the 'flip book' where you actually 'turn' the pages (based on software by British Library).

Library Booklists & LibraryThing

LibraryThing is a great site to create your own personal catalog of books you have read and to check out what others are reading.

New Databases and Homework Help

Don't forget to check out the George Hail Free Library (www.georgehail.org) website for new electronic databases that can help with genealogy, homework, readers advisory, as well as newspapers, magazines and other general information all from the comfort of your own home.

Click on the Reference Department link on the main page to access the Marshall Cavendish digital library, which contains information on plants, animals, geography, health, sciences and culture.

Click on the Research Databases link to access EBSCO databases which include Auto Repair Reference Center, Consumer Health Complete, Student Research Center, Kids Search and NoveList.

NoveList is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and more for over 135,000 fiction titles. It also includes other interesting stuff for fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes, What We're Reading, Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Annotated Book Lists. There is also guidance for teachers and school media specialists.

You can also access Alt Healthwatch, Academic Search Premier, Regional Business News, MasterFILE Premier, Health Source (Consumer and Nursing/Academic Edition), Clinical Pharmacology, Newspaper Source, Primary Search (magazines), EBSCO Animals and TopicSearch (current events).

If you would like to explore your family history, click on the Genealogy link on the front page to access Ancestry (only available at the library), and HeritageQuest Online.

Welcome to "Point of Reference", the new blog for the George Hail Library in Warren, RI.
